Where & Wear – The King Alfred

photo from http://www.thekingalfred.co.uk

For the second in this series about where to go and what to wear in Winchester this weekend, I thought I’d channel a bit of this sunny weather and chill out at a nice pub. If you took my advice last week and ventured to Jewry Street to Greens Wine Bar for a few cocktails then maybe you need a little more relaxation this week? I could certainly do with sitting in a nice beer garden for a few hours, eating a great pub lunch and lazily chatting with friends and family in the sunshine. And now we’re officially into British Summer Time we’ll all be able to enjoy such outdoor havens longer into the evening.

The King Alfred, in Hyde ticks all the boxes for me. Close enough to the centre of town not to have to drive, take a leisurely stroll along the river just past the leisure centre then fork left into the leafy and quiet residential area of Hyde until you find this pretty, traditional Victorian pub on Saxon Road. Its pub garden is unsurpassed in Winchester in my opinion, secluded and lush green with very pretty planting, solid wood tables and shady umbrellas. This pub is perfect for a quiet afternoon with friends sampling the guest beers or when the weather really improves, with a jug of Pimms to share.

The food is good honest pub grub with something tasty and fresh always changing on the specials board. Fishcakes are popular with me and a King Alfred Burger for the other half, don’t overlook the excellent sandwiches too; roast beef with horseradish or home cooked gammon, yum!

On the surface of it you might not think you need to put much effort into what you wear here. After all, who wants to worry about a lazy Sunday afternoon when you’re with the people you like best? But if you ask me the ‘I’ve just thrown this outfit on with no thought and still look wonderful’ look, is sometimes the hardest to get right. Over-do it and you’ll look out of place in such a relaxed atmosphere, under-do it and risk people asking you if you’re all right all afternoon! This calls for a look that I like to call ‘baggy with bling’. Here’s the essence of it:

Happy Weekend Winchester, enjoy yourselves as always.
