Where & Wear – Lainston House

This week finally sees the beginning of May and though the weather is still causing us all bother, I think it is warming up a bit… or is that wishful thinking on my part? Rain or shine however, we all still get a very welcome bank holiday weekend, a perfect excuse for treating ourselves and spending time with family and friends. So to celebrate the (slightly) warmer weather, the one month countdown to Winchester Fashion Week and having a three day weekend I think we should spoil ourselves.

Winchester of course, is well suited to said spoiling in all its glamorous venues and people. But it has none such elegance than that found at Lainston House, Winchester’s premier country house hotel. Set in the beautiful village and farmland of Sparsholt, just a mile or so out of town this 17th century country house is everything Best of British, known for it’s elegance, beauty, outstanding food and wine and unbeatable luxury. So let’s treat ourselves this bank holiday to Winchester’s finest and book ourselves a little treat.

The a la carte and taster menu are simply superb but I think you’ll be surprised at how affordable Lainston House is, especially the May lunch menu and Sunday lunch menu that would be perfect for visiting family and bank holiday dining. The locally sourced produce on the menu is highlighted even further by its Kitchen Garden where head chef Andy Mackenzie finds most of his herbs and veg. But if you ask me Lainston House really excels itself in its Afternoon Tea. Freshly baked and as opulent as one would hope of an afternoon tea you simply must try for yourself, and I particularly recommend the home made lemon curd as a unconventional topping for your scones, delicious! If the weather does decide to cheer up any time soon then request a table on The Terrace, true British summers are always had on the terrace, preferably with bubbly.

Any visit to Lainston House absolutely requires some sort of formal dress. Don’t panic, there is no enforced dress code, but why wouldn’t you want to dress up to these such elegant surroundings? I’d wear a dress personally but you could opt for smart jeans and blazer combo if you wanted. Here’s this weeks outfit selection straight off Winchester High Street with a subtle nod to the Aztec trend.
